Instagram's Evolution
Chapter Five of the textbook focuses entirely on Instagram and how businesses can market effectively on the platform. Reading this chapter reminded me of when I first downloaded Instagram. It was the first social media platform that I ever used. Since then, Instagram has evolved significantly and continues to introduce new features. Even now, there are tools within the app that I was unaware of until reading this chapter.
One section that stood out to me was Instagram Shopping. I did not realize the platform allowed customers to purchase products directly through the app. This feature enables businesses to create dedicated product pages with detailed information, including pricing and descriptions. The chapter also discusses augmented reality shopping, which allows customers to use AR filters to virtually try on products. These features position Instagram as more than just a social networking platform; they make it a retail and marketing tool for businesses.
The features I have personally seen evolve over time include Stories, Reels and Live. Instagram initially centered on traditional feed posts. However, Stories allow users and businesses to share quick, more organic content that disappears after 24 hours. Unlike permanent feed posts, Stories encourage behind-the-scenes content and more frequent interaction with audiences. This shift has changed how brands connect with followers.
Another feature that has grown rapidly is Reels. Instagram introduced Reels in 2020 to compete with short-form video platforms such as TikTok. Reels allow businesses to participate in trends and showcase products through short, engaging videos. The feature includes product tags, call-to-action buttons and advertising options. These tools provide businesses with multiple ways to promote their products while reaching new audiences.
Overall, Instagram's continued innovation explains why it remains one of the top social media platforms in the world. Its ability to adapt to changing trends and integrate marketing tools makes it valuable for both individuals and businesses. When I first downloaded Instagram, I did not recognize the opportunities it would eventually provide. Now, I see it not only as a social platform but also as a powerful marketing resource.
