Konversation With Keegan - Podcast Edition

In a recent blog, I wrote about podcasts being a part of my daily routine and help me pass time while gaining knowledge and new perspectives. This week, I had the opportunity to create my own podcast and interview a professional with experience in social media. The guest I interviewed was Dr. Danielle Foster, an Associate Professor of Marketing at Ohio Northern University and the owner of a marketing platform called The Foster Factor.

This experience allowed me to step into the role of a podcast creator rather than a listener. As a creator, there are several decisions to make, including which platform to use, what jingle to include for the introduction and conclusion, when to publish the episode and what labels or keywords will help reach listeners. These problems opened up my eyes to the amount of work behind-the-scenes that professional podcasters do. I chose to use the platform SoundCloud because it offered flexibility for uploading prerecorded audio. I selected a professional business jingle found on SoundCloud and decided to publish the episode on a Tuesday afternoon after learning in class that average podcasters listen on Wednesdays.

During the podcast, Dr. Foster provided detailed and thoughtful responses to each question. I asked challenging questions about how social media marketing has evolved, common mistakes brands make today, current trends and relevant platforms, and advice for brands moving forward. Two themes appeared consistently through her responses: the importance of consistency and the ability to adapt to change. She mentioned that brands often struggle when multiple people post across different accounts with inconsistent messaging, which makes it difficult for audiences to understand the brand's message. She also discussed the changes in platforms and trends, explaining that younger generations consume content on YouTube through reels and shorts.

Overall, this podcast assignment provided valuable hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of how social media influences marketing. It pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone and challenged me to take on something I would not have attempted myself. I am grateful for Dr. Foster for joining my podcast and helping make the experience memorable.

  1. Hi Keegan! I really enjoyed having Dr. Foster as a professor; she always has the best stories about her experiences working in marketing. I also didn't realize how much work went into crafting a podcast. It was more than I expected! It was super smart to publish your podcast based on what Dr. Aggie covered in class, with the most popular listening day being Wednesday. Your podcast has an abundance of insightful information, and it was edited very well.
