The Business Side of Facebook
According to the textbook, Facebook is the most widely used social networking platform today. That fact is remarkable considering how the company began. The book explains that Facebook was created in a college dorm room by Mark Zuckerberg while he was a student at Harvard University. The story is also portrayed in The Social Network, which details Facebook's early development and rise. It is hard to imagine that a project started by a college student in a dorm room would become the world's leading social media platform.
Growing up, I viewed Facebook as a platform primarily used by older generations. It was a place to reconnect with old friends, share opinions and post life updates. I did not create a Facebook account until after graduating high school, and my main purpose was to stay connected with extended family members who live in different states. I quickly realized how large the platform was and how many people I knew were active on it. Chapter four of the textbook, however, helped me understand that Facebook is more than just a social networking site.
Facebook is also a powerful tool for business marketing. Chapter four explains how to create a Facebook page, build an audience and post content consistently and strategically. Facebook's parent company, Meta Platforms, acquired Instagram in 2012, allowing businesses to connect both platforms through tools such as Meta Business Suite. This feature enables users to manage accounts, track engagement, view analytics, schedule posts and monitor messages. The chapter serves as a guide for creating and managing Facebook and Instagram pages effectively.
After reading the chapter, I reviewed my dad's business pages for Wide Open Graphics on Facebook and Instagram. I quickly noticed he was not using many features available through Meta Business Suite, particularly since he has not posted in more than six months. I plan to share what I learned from this chapter with him, including strategies involving Meta Business Suite, Facebook Zero, content planning and Facebook advertising.
This chapter highlighted the importance of Facebook not only as a social platform but also as a valuable marketing tool for businesses worldwide. It changed the way I view Facebook and its role in digital marketing. It also made me more aware of how businesses can use the platform strategically to grow their presence and reach their audience.
