The Trust Cup

This week marks the fourth week of morning lifts for football, and the workouts are starting to take a toll. Lifts are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with three available time slots each day: 6 a.m., 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. I have always been someone who avoids putting things off and prefers to start the day early, so for the third consecutive year, I chose the 6 a.m. session. However, this spring's lifting program looks different. The coaches introduced a new competition called the Trust Cup.

Last Thursday marked the first completion day for the Trust Cup. At 6 a.m., the entire team gathered on the field to compete in various events. Players participate in tug-of-war, relays, conditioning drills and other competitive activities. Three weeks ago, eight players were selected as captains to draft four teams for the semester-long competition. I was selected as a captain for Team Orange. Teams earn points through multiple events, including GPA, attendance, completed weight charts, competition results and support for other sports teams.

After three weeks, Team Orange has struggled to find momentum. We currently sit third out of four teams, trailing Teams Grey and Black. Despite not winning a single competition, we are only 54 points behind first place. So far, most of our points have come from attendance and completed weight charts. With the competition lasting the entire semester, there is still time to improve and close the gap.

The addition of the Trust Cup has brought new energy to spring lifting. In previous years, the repetitive nature of workouts sometimes led to boredom. This competition has created accountability and excitement, especially during early mornings. It has given us something extra to compete for and keeps everyone engaged. I look forward to continuing the competition with my teammates.

  1. Hello Keegan,
I give you credit for getting up at 6 a.m.! I feel like this idea of the Trust Cup is beneficial to the team, creating incentive to succeed academically and athletically. While trying to personally better yourself this also allows you to strive to be the best you can for your team as well. I definitely believe it would help with motivation and excitement as you said! Good luck with the competition!
