Multiple Uses of LinkedIn

Like many platforms I have discussed in previous blogs, LinkedIn was created in a similar way. LinkedIn was founded in 2002 by Reid Hoffman, a Stanford graduate with experience at companies such as Apple and PayPal. The platform grew rapidly, reaching more than 10 million users within its first few years. In 2016, Microsoft acquired LinkedIn for $26.2 billion, further accelerating its growth. Today, LinkedIn ranks among the most widely used social media platforms in the world.

I was introduced to LinkedIn two years ago in my Career Planning class at Ohio Northern University. The course, required for students in the Dicke College of Business, has been valuable to both my academic and professional development. Through LinkedIn, I was able to connect with professionals I otherwise would not have had access to. The platform played a role in helping me secure my first internship this past summer with Crown Equipment Corporation in New Bremen, Ohio. Linked is a useful tool for young professionals looking to build connections and advance their careers.

LinkedIn is very important for businesses. According to the textbook, there are more than 90 million company pages on the platform, and a majority of businesses use LinkedIn as part of their social media strategy. As social media continues to expand, finding credible and professional networking spaces can be challenging. LinkedIn provides a trusted environment for companies to promote their brand and connect with potential employees. In many cases, a company's LinkedIn page is one of the first points of interaction for job seekers.

From its early beginnings to its current global reach, LinkedIn has grown into more than just a networking site. It supports professional development, marketing and recruiting. For students and aspiring business professionals who have not yet created an account, it is a valuable platform to consider.
