Snapchat's Evolution
Growing up, Snapchat was a primary communication tool for people in my generation. It was used to send pictures and messages back and forth with friends. Today, I mainly use Snapchat to stay connected through group chats. I am part of several groups, including ones with family, friends, teammates and classmates. While communication remains its core function, Snapchat offers much more than messaging.
Snapchat was created in a college dorm, similar to other major social media platforms. It was founded by Evan Speigel and his co-founders at Stanford University. Today, Spiegel is the only remaining founder still leading the company. Snapchat has grown significantly and is now the most widely used social media platforms, with hundreds of millions of active users worldwide.
Since its creation, Snapchat has evolved beyond its original concept of disappearing photos. The platform now includes features such as Stories, chats, Spotlight, filters and Snap map. One feature that stands out is Snapchat's access to live events. The platform has streamed events such as trade shows, product launches and major sporting events. For example, the National Basketball Association has partnered with Snapchat to share content from events like the NBA Draft, All-Star Game and Finals. This expands Snapchat's role from communication tool to media platform.
Another feature that has contributed to Snapchat's growth is Snap Originals. These are short, episodic shows, typically around five minutes, that feature influencers and content creators. These shows often highlight personal stories and experiences. One example mentioned in the textbook focuses on athletes Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens, offering insight into their lives and relationship.
These features demonstrate how Snapchat continues to evolve beyond its original purpose. By expanding into entertainment and live content, the platform has positioned itself as more than just a messaging app. As Snapchat continues to develop new features, it has the potential to grow even further and remain relevant in the changing social media landscape.
