The Changes of X

Chapter six of the textbook focuses on the platform X. Since its launch in 2006 as Twitter, the platform has undergone significant changes. I joined X in April 2019, primarily for news, sports and college football recruiting. In today's recruiting landscape, many college football coaches use X as a primary communication tool. When I decided I wanted to pursue football at the collegiate level, creating a profile became essential.

X serves many purposes, including recruiting, marketing and news distribution. When the platform launched in 2006, it was designed as a short messaging service similar to text messaging. Posts were originally limited to 140 characters. That limit later expanded to 280 characters, and premium subscribers can now post up to 25,000 characters. These changes reflect the platform's shift from brief updates to more in-depth communication.

Beyond character limits, X has introduced several additional features. Users can now include up to four photos in a single post, and video integration has become a central component of engagement. According to the textbook, videos on X generate significantly more replies and reposts compared with text-only posts. The platform has also introduced artificial intelligence tools, such as Grok, which allow users to generate custom content within posts. In 2023, the company was acquired by Elon Musk and rebranded as X, marking another major transformation in its evolution.

Businesses and brands can leverage X's expanded features to grow their presence. The platform offers multiple engagement tools, including GIFs, likes, reposts, replies, hashtags, and mentions. These features create opportunities for interaction and brand visibility.

Since its beginnings as Twitter, the platform has evolved into a comprehensive marketing and branding tool rather than simply a short messaging service. It can support both business and personal branding. In my experience, it played a role in promoting myself to college coaches during recruitment. Understanding how the platform has developed highlights its value for anyone seeking to build a brand or expand an audience.

  1. Keegan! Nice blog this week. Isn't it crazy that premium users can use up to 25,000 characters! I think that X is going to become a more valuable tool for business because of Premium membership as well.
