A Look at the Social Dilemma

This week, I watched The Social Dilemma on Netflix in class for the first time. I had heard people talk about the documentary before, but I had never taken the time to watch it myself. After seeing it, I understand why it has received so much attention. The film was eye-opening and made me think differently about social media and the role it plays in everyday life.

One of the most interesting parts of the documentary was learning how much happens behind a single notification. Most people see a notification as something simple, such as a message, like or reminder. However, the film explains that notifications are carefully designed to capture attention and bring users back onto an app. Behind every alert is a strategy built around engagement, screen time and user behavior. That idea stood out to me because it showed that many of the things we view as random are actually intentional.

Another thing that caught my eye in the documentary was the people it features. The film includes interviews with former executives, managers and high-level employees from major technology companies such as Google, Facebook and Pinterest. Hearing concerns from people who helped build these platforms made the message more powerful. Several of them argued that social media is shifting from a useful tool into something addictive. That is significant because these are individuals who understand the systems better than most people. If the creators of the apps themselves are warning about the effects, it should show that this deserves attention.

I also thought the structure of the documentary made it more effective. Rather than relying solely on interviews and statistics, the film moves back and forth between documentary segments and a fictional storyline. The movie-style scenes follow teenagers as they grow up with smartphones and social media. It shows the emotions they experience, including pressure, comparison and need for approval. Those scenes helped connect the larger ideas to real-life situations that many young people face.

Overall, The Social Dilemma gave me a new perspective on technology and social media. While these platforms can be helpful for communication and entertainment, the documentary highlights the risks that come with constant use. Social media should remain a tool to serve people, not something that controls their behavior.
