A New Perspective on Social Media Marketing

Throughout this semester, reading the textbook Essentials of Social Media Marketing and writing weekly blogs helped me develop a stronger understanding of how social media operates beyond everyday use. At the beginning of the semester, I viewed social media primarily as a way to stay connected with friends and family or for entertainment. However, each chapter and blog assignment challenged me to think about these platforms from a more professional and strategic perspective.

Several chapters stood out as I worked through the book. The chapters focused on individual platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, X, Snapchat, LinkedIn and Pinterest, helped highlight how each platform serves a different purpose. For example, Facebook emphasizes community building and business pages, while Instagram focuses on visual content and brand storytelling. X provides real-time communication and news, while LinkedIn centers on professional networking and career development. Snapchat and Pinterest introduce unique features that support creativity and product discovery.

Writing blogs about each chapter allowed me to break down these ideas and apply them to my own experiences. Instead of simply reading about features such as Instagram Reels, Facebook advertising tools or LinkedIn networking strategies, I was able to reflect on how they work in real-world situations. This process made the material easier to understand and more meaningful. It also helped me recognize patterns across platforms, such as the importance of consistency, audience targeting and engagement.

One of the biggest takeaways from this course is how my perspective on social media has changed. I no longer see these platforms only as tools for scrolling or staying updated with friends. Instead, I now view them through a professional lens. I notice how brands structure posts, how they use tone to connect with audiences and how they take advantage of features to increase visibility and interaction. What once felt like casual content now appears more strategic and intentional.

Overall, the textbook Essentials of Social Media Marketing provided a foundation for understanding how social media functions in a business setting. The weekly blogs reinforced those concepts and helped me apply them in a practical way. This experience has changed how I approach social media and will continue to influence how I use these platforms moving forward.

  2. I am always amazed at how the algorithms work across these social media platforms. They can push to you topics and/or posts that you would be interested in and have interacted with in the past. If you haven’t watched the movie on Netflix called The Social Dilemma, you need to. It shows the power of social media.
