YouTube Then and Now
YouTube has been a part of my life since I was a little kid. I first started using the platform as a kid with my brother, making videos about unwrapping football cards. We loved recording our reactions, showing off our finds and sharing the excitement with each other. Back then, YouTube was just a fun way to pass the time and create something to show our friends later. Those early experiences sparked an interest in content creation, even if it was just for ourselves.
Today, my use of YouTube has shifted from creating to consuming. I now watch videos for entertainment, from golf highlights and sports coverage to comedy shows. Channels like Bob Does Sports, Barstool Sports and Kill Tony are some of my favorites. They make it easy to escape a busy day and enjoy a mix of humor, insight and commentary. YouTube has become a place where I can relax, catch up on sports and laugh on a single platform.
According to chapter 10 in our textbook, YouTube has 2.53 billion active monthly users, making it the second most popular social media platform in the world. That makes it a prime channel for marketing. Every time you see and ad on YouTube, it is backed by millions of dollars aimed at reaching users like me. Advertisers know that people are engaged, whether they are watching for entertainment, education or instructions.
People watch videos on YouTube for many reasons, but entertainment is one of the main ones. A survey in the book found that 53% of users say they use the platform for entertainment, much like I do. For many, YouTube is a break from reality and a chance to unwind after a long day and enjoy a few moments. Whether it's a movie, a sports highlight or an unpackaging, the platform provides an easy way to relax and disconnect for a while.
YouTube has grown far beyond a place for kids to make silly videos with their siblings. It has evolved into a massive platform where people connect, learn and laugh. From my first unwrapping videos to the sports and highlights I watch today; YouTube remains a constant source of enjoyment and this chapter was a reminder of how powerful video content has become in our lives.
Hello Keegan! That's so fun that you and your brother have those memories to look back on. While my use of YouTube hasn't shifted, the content I consume certainty has. I'm sure you could say the same that what you once watched as a kid is different now. Thanks for sharing the pieces that stood out to you in the chapter!
